The low velocity of the river causes deposition which blocks the river channel. The river has to split around the blockage in distributaries. An arcuate delta is formed from course gravel or sand. Because of this the rivers deposits its load easily and forms many distributaries to get to the sea. Another type of delta, the birds' foot delta is formed generally in fine silt.
The land and ecosystem of a delta is very special. Many deltas are famous of their birds life and special species, living close to the sea.
