The picture shows the colonies of Streptomyces aureofaciens growing in Petri-dish.

Taxonomy of Streptomyces aureofaciens is the folowing:

Bacteria
     Actinobacteria
        Actinobacteridae
           Actinomycetales
             Streptomycineae
               Streptomycetaceae
                  Streptomyces

S. aureofaciens is the producer of many tetracycline-type antibiotics. The main tetracycline of the endustrial bacetrial strain  is described chemically as 4-(dimethylamino)-1, 4, 4a, 5, 5a, 6, 11, 12a-octahydro-3, 6, 10, 12, 12a-pentahydroxy-6-methyl-1, 11-dioxo-2-napthacenecarboxamide. It was isolated from Streptomyces aureofaciens and produced in industrial size. The medicine Sumycin for oral administration contains this  tetracycline. The tetracyclines are primarily bacteriostatic and are thought to exert their antimicrobial effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis.
